Power Lab

Lab Guy Larry--a kid's favorite

Mad Science Hair Day

Last week we had an extra fun time at vacation bible school. Laurin and I volunteered at the surprise station and got to help with fun science experiments. Here's a breakdown of what we got to do.

Day 1: We filled test tubes with vegetable oil, water and colored tabs to make cool lava lamps; experimented with tornado tubes, and added water to diaper gel for a spongy surprise.

Day 2: We had bubble day with giant baby pools of soap, square bubble makers, and huge bubble wands.

Day 3: The kids got to play with big plastic balls and balloons with hex nuts inside them with giant fans.

Day 4: We had a spectacular science show complete with dry ice experiments and Diet Coke with Mentos. The finale was 6 rolls of toilet paper and a leaf blower.

Day 5: Water day. I won't go into all the gory details, but for some crazy reason I agreed to cover for a teacher who was sick the last day. I had 13 wild 5 year olds and 2 teenage helpers who weren't much help. Needless to say, I will NEVER agree to such a crazy request again.

More Tornados

So I just heard about the tornado that went through Manhattan, KS including parts of the University campus. This site has the most pictures of the damage in Manhattan that I have found.

WaKeeney Makes International News

This real life Nelly the elephant packed her trunk and said goodbye to the circus - after being spooked by a tornado.

She was one of a pair in Kansas that escaped their enclosure and roamed a town before being captured.

One of the animals entered a back garden less than a mile from the fairgrounds in WaKeeney and was blocked off by fire trucks until trainers could coax it onto a truck, Trego County Sheriff Richard Schneider said.

"I guess it got tired of walking around," he added.
